Turmeric

Turmeric is an ancient spice, used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. It is currently used worldwide in various ways, due to its health benefits.

Here I will share with you the health benefits, the science and the best way to use turmeric for its health benefits. These health benefits include:

The health benefits of using turmeric include:

  • Reducing inflammation
  • Arthritis pain
  • Reducing oxidative stress
  • Help with metabolic syndromes
  • Reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Hyperlipidemia

  • Muscle soreness

Anti- inflammatory

Research suggests Inflammation is the route of most, if not all chronic dis-ease (study), including

neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, autoimmune and neoplastic diseases. You can read the study here.

In various chronic illnesses in which inflammation is known to play a major role, curcumin has been shown to exhibit therapeutic potential. These diseases include Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, cerebral injury, CVDs, cancer, allergy, asthma, bronchitis, colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, renal ischemia, psoriasis, diabetes, obesity, depression, fatigue, and AIDS (see results) By taking control of what you consume you CAN prevent inflammation and therefore prevent disease!

It is surprising to see so much evidence of the disease being linked to inflammation there is, and so much evidence sharing natural remedies to fight it. Yet people are still being prescribed man-made, toxic medications over natural, side effect free relief! So what else is caused by inflammation? This study shows cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes, allergies, asthma, bronchitis, IBD (Inflammatory bowel disease), arthritis, Renal ischemia, psoriasis.  Scleroderma, AIDS and cancer are all triggered by inflammation and all saw an improvement by treatment with curcumin - a natural compound in turmeric.

Arthritis

Cumin has been shown to help prevent inflammation in arthritis, but also in osteoarthritis which was previously thought to be degenerative and non-inflammatory, it is now recognized as having inflammatory aspects, including elevated cytokine levels, as well as potentially being connected with systemic inflammation, therefore benefitting from turmeric. You can read the study in depth here.

Curcumin is shown to help with RA symptoms too - another study that shows this you can see here. And arthritis symptoms in general which you can read more about here.

Oxidative stress

Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in your body. This imbalance can lead to cell and tissue damage. It is a part of ageing so does occur naturally, but there are things that contribute to oxidative stress such as :

  • Diet
  • Lifestyle
  • Environmental toxins
  • Radiation

Oxidative stress can damage cells, proteins, and DNA, which can contribute to ageing.

Long-term oxidative stress may lead to conditions such as:

  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Asthma
  • CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome)

You can prevent oxidative stress by implementing a healthy lifestyle - eating a balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables, reducing daily stress, exercising regularly, reducing intake of alcohol and processed foods, quitting smoking ad reducing exposure to chemicals on your skin. Check the labels of 'beauty' products that you use. Your skin is the largest and most absorbent organ of your body! Adding curcumin to your diet will help reduce oxidative stress and free radicals - you can read more here

Anxiety and depression

Anxiety and depression are super prevalent in the world right now with the prescription of antidepressants are at an all-time high!

A study conducted on rats showed whilst given curcumin an obvious decrease in symptoms of both anxiety and depression was observed. Sadly, like anything natural the studies on humans are limited but did show an improvement in symptoms of those who suffered from clinical depression which is available here. You can read the study on rats here.

Side effects

In all the studies linked above, no side effects were reported. This proves turmeric/ curcumin to be naturally healing and a definite benefit to adding to any adults diet!
